Lexicomp is a computer software which specializes in drug interactions, drug overviews and much more. For patients who are considering sedation for their dental treatment we are able to enter your medications into the system and determine if there are any contraindications with the medications used for sedation.
Also, Lexicomp can be used when our doctors are prescribing medications, such as antibiotics, and allows us to comfortably prescribe the safest prescriptions for our patients and their daily medications.
There are certain medical conditions requiring patients to take a dose of antibiotics prior to their dental procedures. The reason for this is to help prevent any bacteria introduced from the dental treatment from causing an infection in other part of the body, such as the heart lining, known as bacterial endocarditis.
Here are a few conditions requiring premed antibiotics: Artificial Heart Valve; Heart Transplant and Artificial Joints. Normally, premed is only needed for 2 years after the joint replacement surgery.
Diabetes reduces the body’s natural resistance to fight infection and our gums are tissues that are likely to be infected. Gum disease is known as Periodontal Disease which is often linked to Diabetes. Patients with uncontrolled blood sugar levels are at a higher risk for periodontal disease and losing more teeth than someone who has their diabetes in good control.
It is always important to inform your dentist of any medical issues that you have. When having dental treatment it is necessary to be sure that your blood sugar stays in control. If you begin to feel a drop in your sugar level notify our doctor or one of our team members due to the fact that we do have orange juice and/or Gatorade available.
High Blood Pressure
High blood pressure is a significant factor in a person’s overall health. High Blood Pressure plays a significant role and is a major risk factor for congestive heart failure, stroke, heart attack, kidney failure and premature death (known as the silent killer).
Therefore, we do a blood pressure reading at each dental visit. If your blood pressure is out of control, your treatment may be postponed until the readings are consistently controlled. For patients whose pressure is extremely high we may refer you to see your physician immediately or recommend you go directly to the emergency room.
Prexion 3D Scanner
The Prexion 3D is a dental scanner which allows our doctors to view a rotated three dimensional image of the bone height and width. Also, it allows the doctor to view any bone or sinus abnormalities. For implant patients the doctors are able to measure bone levels to determine if there is adequate bone to support an implant.
Using the 3D scanner is a standard of care in our practice that allows our doctors to accurately diagnose needed dental treatment and determine if the patient is a good candidate for dental implants.
